How
a typical imitation-gold leaf "sweep" picture frame is created.
At 1 O'Klok
Select molding, cut to size and miter joints. Glue
and cross-nail corners. Add wire brad splines when ornaments extend
beyond molding edge.
At 2 O'Klok
Mix ingredients and formulate compo. (Formula
provided in Compo book.)
Illustration at right shows a slab of raw compo.
Compo may be finished in a wide variety of ways.
Notice the woodtone finish on the bottom portion of the slab.
At 3 O'Klok
Prepare, press, and mount compo beading, rope, flowers, side and
corner ornaments. Apply and mold compo to backside of ornaments, that extend beyond molding edges, and to the seams between ornaments.
At 4 O'Klok
Carve wood molding at rope position to form "sweep"
between side and corner ornaments.
At 5 O'Klok
<B>Sand and touch up compo imperfections.
Seal frame and ornamentation with thin coat of correct shellac
cut. (Formulas provided in Compo book.)
At 6 O'Klok
Prepare gesso formula (provided in Compo book). Apply first light
coat. Be careful not to clog ornament design. Sand lightly when dry.
